Wrap up right for winter football

The weekend just gone has provided a timely reminder about being equipped for football at this time of year.

A football on an icy fieldWe had to cancel training on Saturday, not because of the cold but due to the pitches being thoroughly waterlogged from a lot of overnight rain.

It was apparent though, while we were standing in the wind, that the really cold weather has now arrived. If we’d all been out there for an hour-and-a-half or more, there would undoubtedly have been a few people caught out by the savagery of the wind, because we haven’t been used to it yet this season.

It’s all very well toughing it out against the weather, but there are no points for bravery when we’re talking about children enjoying their sport!

So, now is the time to think about some thermal under-layers and maybe some gloves for the particularly cold days. Make sure they come in a coat that they can put back on when they’re cooling down after training – and maybe a woolly hat.

As they’re so fond of saying on a certain TV programme these days: “Winter is coming…”
